ROCK NYC calls album release show “totally convincing,” hails LG’s “great sense for melody and varied music arrangements”

Covering the Drunk Sluts Forever album release show at the Satellite on Nov. 8, initially suspicious writer Alyson Camus offers a glowing review of Liam Gowing & the Family Jewels to the readers of Rock NYC Live and Recorded. Repeating the well-worn jab that “music critics are failed musicians,” Camus first admits to being skeptical of the whole affair but after a thorough and critical appraisal of the live performance, calls Gowing “totally credible” and his efforts “totally convincing.”

16 photos and live videos of “So Long (Pine Box),” “Party Down” and “Release” conclude Rock NYC’s coverage of the show.

On a personal note, I’d like to say I’ve never been more anxious before reading a music review or more pleased after having done so. I first came across the byline “Alyson Camus” in a Rock NYC post she wrote criticizing my Dec. 2004 SPIN feature on the death of Elliott Smith as being personally biased in favor of his fiancĂ©e Jennifer Chiba, whom some outliers believe had a hand in his death (never mind that Elliott himself introduced me to her and that she was just one of dozens of sources in my piece). I really took Camus to task in my public rebuttal and gave her an earful after she telephoned me to follow up.

She had every right and probably every inclination to bludgeon my songs, my band and my performance in her review. The fact that she admits to being impressed really warms the cockles.

Ramming speed y’all,

First Press: commends Drunk Sluts Forever’s “biting lyrics” and “mad scientist” eclecticism

Covering the release of Drunk Sluts Forever in today’s “Ears Wide Open” feature, Buzz Bands LA head writer Kevin Bronson likened the eclectic album to “a mixtape” with “a mad scientist feel” and hails the “biting lyrics about the primpers and poseurs and users and abusers the native Texan [Gowing] has observed during his time in L.A.”

Good one!

He goes on to share the album tracks “So Long (Pine Box)” and “The Perfect Parasite” and to recommend readers attend the album release party tomorrow at the Satellite.

Venue info

Taix gig this Friday cancelled… come anyway!

After surveying the cozy environs and low wattage sound gear on site, guitarist Bill O’Neil deemed Taix’s 321 Lounge an unsuitable venue for Liam Gowing & the Family Jewels, who are known for playing loud and distorted. The show will go on with Doran Danoff now opening up for our friends Quazar and the Bamboozled, however, so if you were planning to attend don’t let the lineup change stop you!

Taix gig Friday, Sept. 20 with Quazar and the Bamboozled

Liam Gowing & the Family Jewels have happily accepted an invitation to open for Quazar and the Bamboozled at Taix Restaurant’s 321 Lounge in Echo Park on Friday, Sept. 20. If you haven’t heard of Q & the B, they’re an incredible troupe of eclectic musicians led by the super-witty, super-groovy Brandon Jay, who’s been making waves lately scoring the soundtrack to the Netflix phenomenon “Orange Is the New Black,” with his wife Gwendolyn Sanford. This should be a fun one.

Set times TBA.

Silverlake Lounge gig on Thursday, Aug. 8

Liam Gowing & the Family Jewels will be making their first appearance at the Silverlake Lounge on Thursday, August 8. Doors at 7, show at 8! Also on the bill are Goldenboy, Tijuana Cartel and the Grownup Noise. Check the Silverlake Lounge calendar for event information and updates. And for goodness sake, buy tickets in advance at Ticketfly. The lounge is small so this one may well sell out!

Seeking LA venue for record release show & party

Liam Gowing & the Family Jewels are seeking a 200+ person venue in Los Angeles to book for the Drunk Sluts Forever record release party. A nice stage with room for a six-piece band is key as is a serviceable bar area. A decent PA, speakers and a mixing board already on-site would also a huge plus. If you have a suggestion and/or contact info, please comment below or contact Liam directly.
